The students will recognise how media and important people in the community influence personal attitudes, beliefs, decisions and behaviours.
Recap the previous lesson on Mental Health. As a class, revise ways of improving mental health. Remind the students that good mental health is a sense of wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem. It enables us to fully enjoy and appreciate other people, day-to-day life and our environment. When we are mentally healthy we can:
- Form positive relationships
- Use our abilities to reach our potential
- Deal with life’s challenges

Discuss what an achievement is and how we feel when we achieve.
Ask students to share times when they have attempted to do something and failed. Discuss how they felt and what they did.
The students are given various fact sheets about AIS athletes (U3L3R1), athletes who are important and successful community members. After reading 2 - 3 athlete profiles, discuss with the students how the fact sheets are freely available forms of print media, and that they have been produced to influence our behaviours. Brainstorm the perceived desired outcome that the fact sheets would have, and why they might have been created. Discuss the target audience, and possible reasons for including the information that has been included.
Discuss whether there are parallels between achieving and failing, and winning and losing, and how these things are similar.
Introduce the worksheet My Influences (U3L3R2) and ask students to think about what influences are around them. Students fill out the boxes with positive or negative influences on their life.
Lead the discussion to discuss self-esteem issues and how family, friends, tv and other media, peers and sporting heroes influence them.
